Watercolour illustration of a Mindanao horned frog (Megophrys stejnegeri).
This is one of a series of illustrations produced for Endangered Species International for a trail of interpretive signs highlighting local wildlife in Mount Matutum protected area in the Philippines.
Mindanao horned frogs are endemic to the Philippines. Its relatively small distribution makes it vulnerable to a range of threats including habitat destruction and degradation.
Its cryptic body colours, along with the pointed skin above its eyes, makes it well camouflaged amongst the leaf litter on the forest floor. Its large head an mouth enable it to swallow relatively large prey… as well as giving it a somewhat grumpy-looking demeanour!
